  Standard Poodle 

Registration: All Standard Poodles are registrable with the United Canine Association and eligible to participate in all UCA sanctioned dog shows and events.

The United Canine Association recognized and began recording registration for the Standard Poodle in 2002.
                                        

  

Breed Characteristics:  Standard Poodles are identical to the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle except in height and weight.  The breed standards for all three varieties of Poodles are exactly the same other than the height and weight differences.

The Standard Poodle is a very active, intelligent and elegant-appearing dog. 

Standard Poodles are squarely built, athletically proportioned and carries itself
proudly.  

                              
Country of Origin:  Poodle originated in France.

 

Original Purpose:
  The Standard Poodle is one of the three varieties of the Poodle breed, the other two being the Toy Poodle and the Miniature Poodle.  

All three varieties of Poodle are classified as gun dogs in the retriever family.  The Poodle is renowned for its abilities on both land and in the water. 

In recent years, The Poodle has gained in popularity as watchdogs, companion dogs, and the breed has even excelled as acrobatic circus performers.

The name "Poodle" comes from the German word Pudel, short for Pudelhund, which means “water dog.”


Today's Uses: 
The Poodle excels at many types of canine sports, the breed is frequently used agility, obedience, tracking, and even herding.


Weight:
 The Standard Poodle weighs between 45 - 70 pounds.


Height:
The Standard Poodle is above 15 inches usually about 22-27 inches tall.


Coat:
  The coat of the Poodle is very abundant, curly and dense with a harsh texture.


Color:
 The Poodles come in many colors including solid colors and multi colored or parti colored. 

The most often seen colors are apricot, red, chocolate, cafe au laite, black, gray, white, and blue.


Temperament:
  Poodle usually respond well to training as Poodles are very intelligent and the breed learns most task rather quickly.  As with all breeds the Poodle should be properly socialized to insure a stable and balanced temperament.


With Children:
 
Standard Poodles are super family companions and do very well with children.


With Pets:
  The Standard Poodle is a great dog with other breeds and pets.



Trainability: 
Poodles are renowned for being one of the most trainable dog breeds. Poodles are very intelligent
and can learn an almost unlimited number of tasks, including guarding and babysitting. 

Training a Poodle is best started early, before the Poodle develops its instinctive curiosity.


Activity Level:
  The Standard Poodle is an energetic and athletic breed that enjoys outdoor exercises such as swimming, hiking and retrieving. 

Due to its energy level and athletic abilities the Standard Poodle makes an excellent jogging companion.



Life Expectancy:
  The average life span of a Standard Poodle is 10 - 13 years.

Breed Standard:  Standard Poodle

General Impression:  The Standard Poodle is a squarely built dog with a distinctive harsh curly coat that may be presented in any of several traditional Poodle clips or corded. The ears are long, drop, and densely feathered. The tail is normally docked, set high, and carried erect. The length of body (sternum to point of buttocks) is equal to the height (withers to ground).  As with all Poodle varieties the he Standard Poodle carries itself with an air of dignity and pride.

                 

Head:
The head of the Poodle is proportionate to the size of the dog. When viewed from the side, the skull and muzzle are roughly parallel to one another and joined by a slight but definite stop.

Ears:  The ears of the Standard Poodle are long and wide, low set on the head and dangle close to the face.

Muzzle:  The Standard Poodle has a scissor bite.

Eyes:  Standard Poodles have almond shaped, dark eyes that are not set too close together.

Nose: The nose of the Poodle is black or liver, depending on the color of its coat.

Neck:  Neck well proportioned and of good length.  The Poodles neck is sufficiently strong to allow the head to be carried high when standing or moving.  The skin fits tightly on the neck and throat.

Forequarters:  The shoulders are well laid back, strong and muscular.

Body:  Standard Poodles have a chest that is deep and reasonably wide.  The back of the Poodle is moderately short, strong and slightly hollowed.  The loins of the Poodle , loins broad and muscular. The loin is short, broad and muscular with moderate tuck-up. The ribs extend well back and are well sprung out from the spine,

Hindquarters:  The thighs of the Poodle are well developed and muscular.  The stifles have good curvature, well bent and the hocks are well let down and straight.  The Poodles hind legs turn neither in nor out.

Shoulders:  Shoulders are smooth and muscled. The Poodles shoulder blades are long and well laid back.

Legs:  The Standard Poodles legs are set straight from shoulders and are well muscled.

Movement:  Sound, free movement and light gait are essential.  When moving, the Poodles gait is effortless, smooth, powerful and well coordinated.  The movement should demonstrate good reach in front and drive from behind. 

Feet:  Standard Poodle feet are sturdy and tight, proportionately small and oval in shape with well-arched toes and thick well cushioned pads.  The pasterns of the Standard Poodle are strong.

The feet of the Miniature Poodle do not turn in or out.  The toe nails of the Standard Poodle are short and dark or self-colored, depending on coat color of the Poodle.

It is acceptable to remove the dewclaws of the Miniature Poodle.

Faults: Thin pads, splay foot or feet that turn either in or out.

Height:  The Standard Poodle is 15 inches or above at the shoulders.

Weight:  The Standard Poodle should average 50 - 70 pounds.  The weight of the Standard Poodle is to be in balance with the height of the breed.  Standard Poodles are solid but should not be heavy. 

Color:  The Standard Poodle comes in many colors including solid colors and multi colored or parti colored (two or more colors). 

The most often seen colors are apricot, red, chocolate, cafe au laite, black, gray, white, and blue.

Tail:  The Poodle's tail is straight, set high, and normally docked to a length proportionate to the size of the dog.   Whether standing or moving, the tail of the Poodle is carried erect.

Undocked tails are thick at the base, set on rather high, carried away from the body and as straight as possible.

Serious Faults: Low tail set, tail curled or carried over the back.

Temperament:  Good natured, spirited, intelligent and friendly.
